Hello, I am Rebecca and I have always had a huge love and passion for animals since a young age. I grew up with a lot of farm animals and was always eager to help an injured animal or witness new animal life being brought into the world. As I grew older so did my love and it extended beyond pets and farm animals. I wanted to do more so I set out to find a Rehabber that would mentor me so I could legally help those in need. Seeing a lack of help in our small rural community and surrounding counties for these amazing animals, I became permitted to possess and rehabilitate wildlife. Out of it, Nurture then Nature was born to provide sensible solutions. My main focus is small mammals, specializing in squirrels and raccoons. I also have experience with opossums, woodchucks, mink and chipmunks. I am more than glad to help any creature within my limits and permit. If for any reason I cannot help you with a specific animal I am always happy to point you in the proper direction of a fellow rehabber that can help with your situation. We've grown since last year, all thanks to the helping hands of our amazing community and fellow wildlife lovers alike.
We focus on making the maximum positive effect. We are dedicated to providing the best quality care to every animal. Using community driven models, we take actions that make a long-lasting difference.
Your support and contributions will enable us to help these animals. Your generous donation will fund our mission in their rehabilitation process and extended care.
Please reach us on Facebook messenger at Nurture then Nature if you cannot find an answer to your question.
If you have found an orphaned infant please secure as safely as possible, do not attempt to feed as this could cause aspiration and other potentially deadly outcomes. Get warm by either using a water bottle with hot water or a sock with rice briefly microwaved. Please avoid using towels as their nails can snag. We recommend using an old t-shirt or fleece blanket/receiving blanket. Immediately call your local rehabilitation rescue. If injured please call your local rehabilitation rescue immediately and give a detailed location on the animals whereabouts. If we're unable to help we can direct you to someone who can.
As good as you feel your intentions may be the answer is no. It is illegal in the state of Michigan to possess wildlife. This generally ends in the animal being euthanized if you are found with an illegal animal in your possession. A professional and licensed/permitted rehabber is the best opportunity for an animal to survive and have the proper care. Connect with your local rehabilitation rescue to find help and placement.
If you have found an infant animal, please do not attempt to feed. This can potentially cause several issues. Trust us! It's much easier for us to deal with a dehydrated animal than one in the early stages of pneumonia. Call your local rehabilitation rescue immediately for more details and instructions on how to handle the situation.
We have not seen a raccoon related case of rabies in Michigan in decades. If a raccoon seems ill and is acting strange, it is most likely related to distemper. Please contact a local rehabilitation rescue immediately as the animal can be saved with proper treatment and medication. Raccoon mother's often are out during the day in search of food for their infants, it is completely normal to see them out both during the day as well as night.
It is uncommon for an infant squirrel to continuously follow a human or even climb up them. This is a desperate sign that the squirrel is in need of help as the Mother is most likely deceased. Please contact a local rehabilitation rescue immediately for help. Safely secure the animal in question under the direction of a Rehabber.
If you see an infant squirrel on the ground and the nest above please call your local rehabilitation rescue immediately. We can direct you via phone how to reunite the baby with the Mother using step by step instructions. While it may not work 100 percent of the time, being with their Mother and nest mates is always the best option for all wildlife.
